Quilombo - Community Tour on Itaparica Island

Crossing the Todos os Santos Bay by boat for an adventure of discovery and knowledge on Itaparica Island, exploring part of the history, the native culture and the local portuguese colonization. We will start from the hotel, heading towards Salvador's Nautical Terminal to sail across the bay to Mar Grande. On this itinerary, we will visit a “Quilombo”, the Tereré, a community reminiscent of the old quilombos, whose residents are descendants of quilombolas and African enslaved. This is where part of the history of its inhabitants will be revealed, their origins and customs. We will descover the oil palm tree, a tree whose fruits produce the famous palm oil. After a short walk through the community orchard, where you will taste fruits and spices grown on the premises, we will visit a Candomblé yard located within the quilombo and learn more about the customs and traditions of this religion of African heritage. Afterwards, we will enjoy a home cooked lunch prepared by our hosts, ending the activities to the music and the sound of berimbau played by the young locals. The second part of our journey begins with an historic tour walking through Itaparica Island center and waterfront, continuing our tour through the streets of this 17th century city, including, by the end, as optional, nautical activities (SAILING, SUP, SWIMMING & ROWING) at the SOMAR Social Project Headquarters, which give support to children and youngsters of the community. We will end with a visit with a stop at the source of “Fonte da Bica”, known for its rejuvenating properties. Hopefully we will enjoy a beautiful sunset over the bay on our return to Salvador.
